Company background and profile 

Tata Motors belongs to the Tata Group that Jamsetji Tata started in 1868. The journey of Tata Motos began in 1945. Today they are one of the leading automobile manufacturers in the world and the largest in India. They rank among India’s top passenger car manufacturers with more than 9 million Tata Motor cars on the road. Besides, they own some iconic global brands, like Jaguar Land Rover in the UK and Tata Daewoo in South Korea. They have a strong network of more than 76 subsidiaries. 

The company can boast about fifty years of deep understanding of the industry with technical expertise that matches the world standard. It first started exporting cars in 1961. Their commercial and passenger vehicles are sold in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia, South Asia, and South America.

Tata Motors have an operation PAN India and offices in the UK, South Korea, Thailand, South Africa, and Indonesia.   

Tata Motors started operating in 1954 and have manufacturing bases in India in Jamshedpur, Pune, Lucknow, Pantnagar, and Dharwad. It was the first Indian engineering company to list on the New York Stock Exchange in 2004. In 2005, they started a joint venture with Fiat Group Automobiles to produce Fiat and Tata cars at Ranjangaon (Maharashtra). 

In 2008, Tata Motors unveiled Tata Nano, a compact car to make every Indian’s dream to own a car come true. They had set up a new manufacturing unit in Sanand, Gujarat, to manufacture Nano. 

Company performance 

  • The current pandemic condition impacted the company’s performance in Q2, FY22. Its losses widened by Rs 4,442 crore, mainly due to slow business Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Covid- induced global chip shortage. 
  • However, the company’s revenue from domestic business in the quarter increased by 90.7% to Rs 18.4 thousand crores. 
  • Their loss before tax has reduced from Rs 1,166 crore during the same period last year to Rs 819 crore. 
  • Consolidated revenue increased to Rs 61,379 crore from last year’s Rs 53,530 crore.
